Sometimes the most rewarding adventures come with a side of chaos – and our Sunday waterfall expedition was no exception.
The Great Parking Battle

The short hike to the lower platform was like nature’s warm-up act. Along the way, we discovered fascinating waterflow landmarks and informational signs that turned our walk into an impromptu geology lesson. The kids loved spotting the multi-cache waypoints scattered throughout the trail – a treasure hunt within our adventure!

We circled the lower parking area like vultures, hoping for a miracle. Lucky for us, the parking gods smiled down – we snagged a free spot in the gravel lot just as someone was leaving. Pro tip: The upper deck parking near the gift shop will charge you, so fight for those lower spots if you can. Just be warned – park in the gravel lot and you might get blocked in by fellow adventure-seekers. Since we planned to make a full day of it, we didn’t mind the risk.
The Lower Falls: Worth the Wait
But here’s where Sunday crowds became real: we actually had to wait in line to get onto the viewing platform! I’ve never queued for a waterfall before, but everyone was surprisingly patient and respectful. The revolving door of photo-taking families moved quickly, and soon we were standing on the breezy lower deck, mist cooling our faces as we snapped our mandatory waterfall selfies.
Riverside Respite

After our photo session, we retreated to the picnic tables near the parking area for lunch. The lower area offers several spots to eat – two tables right by the parking lot and another cluster near the bathrooms along the trail. Perfect for refueling before the next phase of our adventure.
The boys were itching to swim, and honestly, we all needed to cool off before tackling the upper deck hike. Getting down to the river was straightforward, but reaching the sandy swimming area required some rock-hopping skills. If you’re comfortable navigating large boulders, you’ll be fine. If not, take your time and watch your step.
We bypassed the rocky sections and found our perfect spot on the sandy beach. Despite the crowds, something magical happened – the sound of rushing water and gentle rapids created this bubble of peace around us. We couldn’t see the falls from our riverside camp, but we had front-row seats to watch tubers floating by on their lazy river adventures.
Mental note: We spotted a local floating business operating pickup and drop-off services. River tubing is definitely going on our return trip list!
The water was absolutely freezing, but try telling that to excited kids. They dove in anyway, building sandcastles, playing impromptu soccer games, and living their best river life while we parents soaked up some reading time on the beach.
The Upper Deck Challenge
After our riverside break, we tackled the hike to the upper viewing deck. Fair warning – this is all uphill, and I’d strongly recommend proper hiking shoes. My kids proved it’s technically possible to do this hike in Crocs, but the complaints were… significant.

The climb was worth every step. The forest transformed around us into something straight out of a fairy tale – massive fallen logs creating natural bridges, trees twisted together in impossible tangles, and that lush Pacific Northwest canopy filtering the sunlight into golden beams. The upper deck view was absolutely breathtaking, offering a completely different perspective of the falls. Seeing both the lower and upper viewpoints is essential – each offers its own unique magic and together they tell the complete story of Snoqualmie Falls.

At the upper deck, we discovered a delightful bonus: a small gift shop housing an ice cream and coffee shop, complete with fascinating historical information about the falls. After our uphill trek, we definitely earned that ice cream reward! As is our family tradition, we also picked up a Christmas ornament for our tree – a little keepsake from every new place we explore.
Geocaching Gold Mine
Before heading home, we had one more mission to complete. Snoqualmie Falls is a geocaching paradise with 8 different caches available: 2 adventure labs, 1 multi-cache, 1 mystery cache, 2 traditional caches, 1 earthcache, and 1 virtual cache. For geocaching enthusiasts, this spot offers variety that could easily fill an entire day. Of course, we couldn’t resist clearing them all out before our journey home – the perfect treasure hunt finale to our waterfall adventure.
